Press Tad's left hand to turn him on and he launches into a catchy song while various colored shapes light up on his bib. When one of the lights flashes repeatedly, press it and Tad exclaims "Whee!" and identifies both color and shape. The colored shapes can be pressed at any time to be identified. Tad's right hand can be pressed to hear other cheerful, upbeat songs. Press his left hand again and he turns off with a happy "Adios!" It's hard enough to make educational toys fun, but to make them both fun and cuddly is quite a feat. Baby Tad fortunately fills the bill. --John Moe

How do you say "Ribbit" in Spanish? This huggable frog is one great learning tool, teaching toddlers and preschoolers the alphabet, phonics, numbers, colors, reasoning, and manners--all in Spanish. When kids press the letters on his shirt or the numbers on his webbed fingers, he says the selection aloud. Little ones can also play in search mode to learn letter and number names and sounds. Yet another activity lets kids experiment with letter and number sequence. They'll enjoy playing games like "Hide and Seek," "Say Please," "Name Game," and singing the alphabet and a counting song. A small LCD screen shows simple animations and demonstrates how numbers are to be drawn while a magnetic writing slate lets kids practice the numbers they've learned. A friendly and clear voice guides kids along. While we found both volume settings to be quite loud and the erasable drawing slate didn't erase as thoroughly as we might like, these are minor gripes. Depending upon their developmental level, players choose one of six progressively challenging games. Phonics Pond motivates preschoolers to follow oral directions. If the wrong button is selected, a catchy noise lets them know to try again, and if players are stuck, they can press the help button for clues. When the correct answer is chosen, the computer voice provides praise and encouragement. A 2-year-old tester enjoyed continuously pressing the raised plastic letters while in the alphabet learning mode, and as he grows he'll be ready for the more challenging options. Here's a fun way to enhance and reinforce an understanding of the ABCs for young learners. Leap's tree house, as he tells you in song, has all 26 letters of the alphabet arranged in a large circle. There are two different modes of play to select. Using one setting, players push a button in the middle of the wheel, causing it to spin and finally land on a letter. In another mode, Leap (whom you may know from countless LeapPad adventures) gives you a letter and asks you to make it appear in the window at the top of the wheel. Underneath the main window, three additional windows appear with pictures behind them. The challenge is then to find the picture that corresponds with the letter--U for umbrella and so on. We like the combination of physical movement and language development this toy presents, and it's a fine way to introduce kids to the ABCs. --John Moe
